Description/History

This car has an interesting history.  Prepared by Bodymotion Racing of Ocean City, NJ in 1992, this black Porsche 930 was intended to be the fastest Porsche on the planet.  Although it is usable on public roads, it is a race car.  Nothing was spared when modifying this 930 since the original owner wanted to win the Silver State Classic Road Race.  The Silver State Classic is a public race which runs 90 miles of straight road across the state of Nevada.  The original owner strictly required this 930 to be capable of speeds over 200mph, and took zero shortcuts when having this car equipped for such speeds.  As soon as the first cylinder pops, you will understand that this is no ordinary Porsche 930.  930's are a rare car to begin with, but this particular 930 is a one of a kind 930.  Unfortunately the Silver State Classic Road Race in which this 930 was intended was cancelled.  The owner drove the car leisurely on and off for a few years, but lost interest and stored the car, selling it five years after the race it was designed for.  Since this 930 looks close to stock to the unfamiliar, this car is particularly stealthy.  The Ruf wheels may tip you off that this 930 could possibly be modified; at first glance.  Upon further investigation of the external surface of the 930, the lower, cleaner, functional IMSA Ruf front air dam with twin oil-coolers suggests something extra may have been done to the engine itself.  A glance through the windows into the interior almost cements the fact this car is extremely modified since the roll cage cannot be ignored.  For the familiar, the clock would seem to be missing and replaced with a turbo boost gauge which has a limit of 2 bar.  Upon investigating the back side of the car, where the horsepower resides, one might notice the two over-sized exhaust pipes on either side, accompanied by the blow-off valve.  Since a stock 930 only has a single exhaust outlet, this would prove that the exhaust is extensively modified.  It does happen do be all custom made exhaust.  Each pipe was measured, cut, bent, and welded to fit this car properly.  The mufflers are nothing that could be found at any parts store.  Rather, they are custom-made Porsche racing mufflers.  Since the exhaust is constituted of stainless steel, it glimmers like it is brand new.  If you have the chance to look underneath the rear bumper, provided the car has cooled down, you would notice an extremely oversized singular turbo connected to the blow-off valve.  If you had room to turn your head,  you would be astounded by the fact that you can see three spark plugs on the bottom side of the heads.  No stock Porsche has plugs on the bottom side of the heads.  This 930 has custom heads with two spark plugs per cylinder.  Three spark plugs are located on the top of the heads and another three are located on the bottom.  If you have the chance to pull the hood release, swing the rear wiper over and pull the big wail tail up, you will see the heart of this car, the 3.4L turbocharged German-engineered six cylinder.  Completely different thinking went into designing this engine.  American manufacturers generally design a car with the engine in the front of the car.  Transmissions are placed near engine on the side in order to make room for a front-drive vehicle.  What is particularly impressive with Porsche's engine and transmission design is that everything seems to be perfectly symmetrical overall.  The engine is not transversely mounted.  Rather, the cylinder banks run parallel with the front and back of the car.  The 930's 4 speed transmission seems to be an engineering miracle.  There is so little space available for an engine in the back of this car, let alone a transmission.  Since the engine actually sits behind the rear wheels, the power from it must exit via the front end towards the front of the car.  That is precisely the area where the transmission is located.  A very long link runs from the transmission to the driver's gear shifter.  This amazing compact transmission is able to fit in this compact space as well as perform.  There is very little space to run drive axles to the rear wheels, but Porsche engineers did a splendid job, once again.  How much time was invested to make a transmission capable of handling this immense amount of horsepower?  It is important to know that the compression ratio of the engine was actually lowered.  The stock 930's have low compression ratios in order to handle the increased pressure of the turbo's forced air input.  Since the K-29 turbo with which this 930 is equipped produces amazing amounts of pressure, or "boost" as its known as, the stock compression ratio would be to high.  Heads were carefully chosen for this 930.  The dimensions of the cylinders were totally revamped as a result of the head change.  In order to have more a more optimized bore and stroke of the pistons, the head had to be meet certain requirements.  It is believed that the stroke was shortened and the bore (diameter) of the piston was enlarged.  Described is a recipe for immense amounts of powerful  torque.  The torque that only 3.4L can produce will truly open your eyes.  It is also interesting to note that out of all the parts available, intake manifolds from an older, non-turbo Porsche are put to use.  One can easily loose themselves under the hood of this 930.  The amount of thinking, planning, and labor that went into this great car can only truly be appreciated by closely viewing the engine and all it's components.  Of course, when the engine was being modified, it wasn't in the car.  It, along with the transmission and exhaust were "dropped" or unbolted and lowered from the 930.  Unfortunately, I have run out of time describing this car and must resume at a later date.  Please visit again.

Porsche 930 For Sale • 1988 PORSCHE 930 TURBO RACE CAR RUF MODIFIED

"...Original owner modified it for the Silver State Race, which is an unlimited class race which runs the length of the state of Nevada. The race was cancelled and the first owner lost interest in the car completely and never raced it. The 2nd owner put 10k on it and didn't race it. I picked it up from the 2nd owner. The car has extensive suspension modifications and engine modifications including a full roll cage, upgraded turbo, and many other mods. The car puts out 474 horsepower at the rear wheels (600 at the crank) which is good enough to push it past 200mph. When driven at night, you might actually see flames shoot out the exhaust pipe as the turbo blasts air through the cylinders and raw power engulfs you. This car is tuned for very serious racing, much like the famous Kremer 935's.  It takes a level-head to handle this kind of horsepower.  I enjoy driving on warm, sunny days. It handles phenomenally because of its many suspension modifications. The chassis is so rigid and tight that I can feel every detail of the road when I am cornering on tight, twisty roads. The turbo shoots you out of corners like a cannon when you have the car in the correct gear and the rpm's in the beginning of the power curve. It is a very fun car to drive."
